Week One: Conservation
Conservation is something that really means a lot to me. Earlier this year I was able to participate in an internship with the National
Association of Conservation Districts in Washington, D.C. and it really made me think even more about the importance of conserving what we have on this Earth. Leadership, creativity and innovation have a big place in conservation.
This article covers the recent change that took the giant panda off of the endangered species list! While the giant panda is still considered a "vulnerable" species, this is a huge accomplishment that could not have happened without the leadership and initiative of those taking a stand for conservation. http://wwf.panda.org/wwf_news/?277170/Giant-panda-no-longer-endangered-but-iconic-species-still-at-risk
My next reading looks at innovation in conservation. The USDA's National Resource Conservation Service issues a yearly Conservation Innovation Grant to encourage new practices in conservation. Here is a success story of a an orchard that used their grant to find a cleaner way to burn wood from their orchard. http://blogs.usda.gov/2016/07/20/cleaner-air-through-cleaner-burning/#more-65742
Lastly I have an example of something that uses creativity to directly impact conservation. This site creates and sells jewelry that benefits the conservation of various animals and their habitats. http://creations4wildlife.com/

Week Ten: Doggies
Who doesn't love pups? Puppies are adorable and so sweet. I wish I could have them all. So this week let's check out what is new and creative in the world of doggos!
This first article covers some new products that came out for dogs in 2016. These products include new collars, snacks, and care products.
http://iheartdogs.com/9-new-dog-products-for-2016/
This next article has a list of creative and ingenious products and toys for your pup. There are a loy of really out-of-the-box products that are super cool and could be very helpful in caring for a dog.

Week Eleven:
Week Two: Swimming
Swimming has been part of my life since I was three years old. While I no longer swim competitively, I'm still in love with the sport and it has taught me so many things about life both in and out of the pool. Swimming incorporates leadership, creativity, and innovation in the sport.
The first article I have is from SwimSwam. SwimSwam is a swimming blog and website that run by swimmers and for swimmers. It provides updates about what is going on in the sport and provides fun content that swimmers can appreciate. This specific article covers the leadership qualities that come as a "side effect" of competitive swimming.
https://swimswam.com/leadership-skills-side-effect-swimming/
I think that the next article and video I looked up for this week is really cool! In Sweden there are a lot of children who don't know how to swim, and feel left out because of it. To combat this, a few organizations partnered up and are using virtual reality experiences to get kids more familiar with the water and less afraid of trying to swim. The article and video show that this process is helping kids become eager to learn to swim and it expresses the importance of knowing how to swim. I think this really shows creativity and innovation.
http://creativity-online.com/work/eonswedish-swimming-federation-power-of-swimming/48032
Lastly I found a short video about a recent innovation in swimming. Ryan Lochte (despite the controversial events that took place after the Rio Olympics), is one of the best swimmers in recent history. In the 2016 Olympic Trials and at the Rio Olympics, Ryan performed a flip-turn that has never really been seen before. His "new" flip-turn technique helped him to drop time in his events and improve his swims. While this is not yet a common practice, it may become more common now that Lochte has brought the technique onto the international level.

Week Three: Agriculture
For nearly my entire life I have lived on a small town grain farm. Once I was old enough, I was able to work on the farm and as I got older I was given more responsibilities. Growing up like this, I was instilled with a deep appreciation for agriculture and it's importance in society. While I don't have an interest in continuing my farming lifestyle into the future, I still have a respect for and interest in agriculture and the way that it has shaped my life.
The first article I found covers the leadership of women in agriculture. This is a field that is predominantly male dominated, but this article features four women who are leading the way for women in the industry. They were all the first women presidents of their respective commodity organizations. In this article they provide a few tips for women who are looking to make their mark in the agriculture industry as well.
http://blogs.usda.gov/2015/04/14/women-leaders-in-agriculture-look-to-the-future/
Technology and agriculture are working together more and more to make farming more effective and efficient. From the development of auto-steer in tractors to being able to control irrigation systems from your phone, there are always new innovations in agriculture technology. This article covers some of the newer agriculture technologies that are being used on farms and in crops around the world.
http://raconteur.net/sustainability/top-5-tech-innovations-in-agriculture
The last article that I found for this week provides five creative ways that people are able to implement agriculture in urban areas. This is something that I find really interesting. In high school I was the president of my school's Future Farmers of America chapter. One of the projects we completed was installing a greenhouse on school grounds so that students could take agriculture classes and grow fresh food for the cafeteria. While I grew up in a more rural area, the idea is the same: to find ways to bring agriculture to people who might not normally get to experience it. This article shows a few ways in which this can be done in an urban setting. http://www.ecowatch.com/5-examples-of-creative-urban-agriculture-from-around-the-world-1881802016.html

Week Four: Plastic Surgery
For some reason I am completely fascinated by plastic surgery. I think that the amount of things that can be done through plastic surgery procedures is absolutely insane and amazing. I'll watch television shows about reconstructive plastic surgery and about correcting botched surgeries. I also watch Dr. Miami's Snapchat stories daily (@therealdrmiami). In these, he posts the surgeries he does each day and narrates them for the viewers. I don't know why I find it super interesting, but I do! So for this week I decided to look into what innovations are being made in the field of plastic surgery.
This first article talks about how the University of Western Australia is working on a 3D imaging system that will give patients of cosmetic surgery a better idea of how they will look after their procedure. This technology is intended to be more precise and accurate than the 2D images that are more commonly used by doctors right now. In addition, I found another article that looked at the same technology in a more negative way. The second article says that the technology might lead people to "rush into" these medical procedures that are not necessary. They also said that while the technology can provide a prediction of the surgical outcome, there are a lot of other factors that can affect the final product which may lead the patient to be dissatisfied.

This next article from The Wall Street Journal considers what the future of plastic surgery will be. It looks forward 30 years and talks about what technologies will be needed as well as what people are going to want and need in the future. The article compares the innovations that will take place, and the demand that will come as a result of technological innovations in the field of plastic surgery as well as outside of that field. I found this article to be very interesting and I think it brings up a lot of things to consider. http://www.wsj.com/articles/the-future-of-plastic-surgery-1430104229
My last article for the week takes the idea of 3D imaging and takes it even further: 3D printing. There is even newer technology being produced that can print out a before and after model of a rhinoplasty. This gives the patient a model to actually look at and feel. They are able to see what the intended result of their surgery will be. The article states that the downside of this technology is increased expectations and high cost, but the benefits to the patient are extremely large.

Week Five: Football
My family is a huge football family. All of us like to play, watch, or coach the sport. It has always been a part of my life and something that I enjoy. Football is also a sport that opens the door for leadership, creativity, and innovation.
The first article for this week talks about leadership in the sport. It focuses on the leadership qualities that can come as a result of playing a team sport such as football.
http://time.com/3394678/nothing-teaches-leadership-like-football/
The next article I found talks about the various technological innovations that have changed the game of football and the National Football League in general. The innovations range from the development of HDTV to the fabrics of the apparel. Although this article is from a few years ago, these innovations have changed the way that we watch the sport and now it would be hard to imagine the sport without them.
http://www.popularmechanics.com/adventure/sportss/g1094/10-tech-innovations-that-changed-the-nfl/?
The final article this week talks about innovations in football helmets. This is something that has been very controversial in recent years because of the long-term effects of head injuries that happen in the game of football. This article talks about a new helmet that was developed that is supposed to work like the bumper of a car. It is made out of different materials than the standard helmet and is supposed to provide more protection for players.

Week Six: Coloring
It may sound childish, but I love to color. I could color all the time. I have a stack of coloring books in my room and a ton of crayons and colored pencils. It's a good way to relax and unwind when things are stressful. Since coloring plays a positive part in my life, I wanted to see what ways it can be connected to creativity, leadership, and innovation.
It's kind of a coincidence that the first article I found on innovations in coloring books was actually about an innovation that I was able to see in person at the Maker Faire I attended in Cincinnati recently. The invention is by Disney and it allows kids to use a mobile app that turns their coloring pages into 3D images that they can interact with. I thought that this was a super interesting concept when I saw it at the Maker Faire, so I was excited to be able to learn more about it.
https://www.fastcodesign.com/3051895/disneys-crazy-new-tech-brings-coloring-books-to-life
The second article I found talks about the benefits that adults can experience if they color. It says that coloring "can improve career and academic success, reduce stress and encourage an innovative work performance." It also says that it can "help train the mind to better focus, relax and reset." It also talks about the opportunities for artists to sell their own coloring books and the way that the market for adult coloring books has tremendously grown recently.
https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/254682
The last article I found relates to leadership in coloring. It tells the story of how one artist is using self-publishing platforms to produce her own coloring books and make money. It talks about the process that got her there and what steps she took. It shows the leadership and determination that she used to make a living by doing what she loves.

Week Seven: Tattoos
I think that tattoos are an interesting way for a person to express themselves and leave a marking of a memory, a love or something that has a lot of meaning to them. I've always liked looking at tattoos and talking to people about what their tattoos mean to them. Tattooing is a creative endeavor in itself, but I was curious to find out if there were any new changes or innovations in the art.
I first found an article about the "end" of permanent tattoos. A company is trying to find a solution for "commitment-phobic" people that are interested in getting inked. They are developing two products that they hope can help to allow these kinds of people to still be able to get a tattoo without worrying that they will regret it or not like it anymore in the future. They are working on both an ink that will break down on its own over the course of a year. The company also wants to create a solution that a tattoo artist can trace over the tattoo with that allows it to fade more quickly. They hope to have these products completed by the end of 2018.
http://bgr.com/2016/05/23/end-of-permanent-tattoos-startup-develops-new-high-tech-ink/
The next article I found was about "smart tattoos." These are temporary tattoos that can be applied to the skin and are artistic and functional. The tattoos are electronic and can be used in a variety of ways. There are tattoos that are metallic and will be able to be linked to devices and smart phones. Soon you might be able to control your phone with a temporary tattoo.
http://money.cnn.com/2016/08/15/technology/mit-tattoo/
My final article for the week discusses the potential of robot tattoo artists. There are robots that are being created, similar to 3D printers, that can give tattoos. The article talks about the possibility of these robots taking over the tattoo industry and what place they might have in the future. While the article states that commercial robot tattoos are probably far in the future because of the cost and innovations that still have to be addressed, it is a fun idea to think about.

Week Eight: Restaurants
This week I decided to check out innovation in restaurants. There was no specific reason for the these this week, I just thought it would be interesting to look at restaurants and what they're doing differently.
First up is a restaurant in Shanghai. CNN posted an article about a restaurant called Ultraviolet, asking if it was the most innovative restaurant in the world. This restaurant uses technology, scent emitters, and exclusivity to bring customers an "immersive dining adventure." Ultraviolet is expensive and only serves 10 diners at a time, but it has an extremely high-tech environment and quality food that cultivates a lot of interest.
http://www.cnn.com/2016/08/25/foodanddrink/china-shanghai-ultra-violet/
Next up is an article from Business Insider. This article takes a look at the most innovative restaurants in America. The restaurants highlighted in this article boast things like their own sustainable farms, extremely low prices, and even suggested prices. One restaurant in Florida allows people to volunteer their time for food. One restaurant featured is on the farm where the ingredients come from, while another is both an eatery and a laundromat. The article also includes a completely automated restaurant. This article highlights many different ways in which a restaurant can be innovative and stand out compared to others. While some of the ideas are pretty out there, some might lead to a road trip to check them out!
http://www.businessinsider.com/innovative-restaurants-in-america-change-how-we-think-about-food-2016-9/#eatsa-san-francisco-berkeley-and-woodland-hills-california-6
Lastly, I decided to look up restaurants that have creative themes or are located in unique places. The article I found goes through 16 of the most unique restaurants in the world. In some of these restaurants you can dine in ice, an airplane, a jail cell, underwater, and even high above the ground. This list of places really shows creativity in the choice of location.

Week Nine: Christmas Trees
Christmas is my favorite time of the year by far. I love the season and everything about it. Growing up I spent every winter working on a Christmas tree farm and it is one of my favorite memories. So for this week I decided to look at innovations in Christmas trees.
Since i worked on a tree farm, I have a soft spot for real Christmas trees. This first article gives ways for people to recycle their trees so that they do not go to waste after the holiday season.
http://www.inhabitots.com/4-ways-to-recycle-your-christmas-tree/
Even though I prefer real trees, they are not a viable option for all people. This article gives a short list of creative alternatives to a real or traditional artificial tree.
http://www.boredpanda.com/diy-christmas-tree/
Many artificial trees are toxic when they have to be disposed of. So for my last article I found one that gives instructions on how to find an artificial tree that is non-toxic.

Week Ten: Shoes
I love myself a good pair of shoes and I always have. Sadly I don't have the money to support the amount of shoes that I want to buy, so instead I do a little window shopping and look around at shoes I wish I could have. For this week I am looking at new innovations in footwear.
The first article that I found looks at the biggest innovations in shoes that Nike unveiled in 2016.
http://www.highsnobiety.com/2016/03/16/nike-innovations-2016/
The second link that I found is to a website that sells a pair of shoes with interchangable heels that makes one pair of shoes fit for a variety of occasions. I saw these shoes on social media and decided to check them out more.
